Interview With Animator and Artist Norman Engel
Wednesday October 19, 2005
Norman Engel is one of my old instructors from the Art Institute of Houston, and the one that I remember the most--for being a cynic, for being a smart aleck, and for an amazing and unique style that defied other instructors' constant blandishments to erase one's individuality in art just to be marketable. Norman taught me more about art than just technique, and while he can be a man of few words, they're usually worth listening to, once you filter through the sarcasm. His work is brilliant with a noted aesthetic touch and an eye for color and composition, and he applies an intense devotion and passion to his art, whether in the traditional areas of fine art or in any form of animation.
Now, he wasn't kind enough to provide us with a photo, although I'd love to have shown you why my favorite nickname for him was "Shaggy". But there are some lovely 3D-rendered stills as well as a piece of his painted fine art that you can view from his interview, and they're definitely worth taking a look at.
