Wednesday June 14, 2006
Here's a quick way to get around the Text Tool's solid fill restrictions on text colors, by breaking text down into fills that can be flooded with gradient color.

why not just make a gradient box in a layer underneath your text and then make your text a layer mask? you’ll be able to manipulate both parts (the text and the gradient) much easier. I realize this was written 2 years ago but thought in case someone was searching (like I was) for this info it would help.

That’s right, that works beautifully. I think that the explanation on here is just old school. Breaking the text apart isn’t necessary for this effect.

You both realize you’re responding to a post from 2006, right? Of course the technique’s outdated by now.

The original post may be from 2006, but stephan’s answer actually solved the problem for me in 2008 (or what’s left of it.) Yes, there are others out here looking for answers and having several options available can’t hurt. Sometimes the old posts are still relevant.

Great tip, the mask way of adding gradient to text helps with flash banners. :)
