What's your favorite animation of all time?
Sunday August 24, 2008
The other day my significant other, a self-declared otaku (much to my embarrassment) and I were discussing favorite animations. Naturally my SO's were mostly Japanese; mine ran the gamut, from a recent favorite of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children to an older one in Biker Mice from Mars. As the discussion wore on, though, we tried to settle on an all-time favorite, which made for much debate and waffling between one or the other. For me, I finally had to say it was a toss-up between two classics from my early teen years: Exosquad, which many may not remember, and ReBoot (which is making a comeback!). For my SO, it ended up being Pinky and the Brain. What about you? What's your all-time favorite animated show, movie, game sequence, or other animation?

First I don’t know why there are still those who simply can’t admit that OVERALL, when you put the BEST of Anime vs. the BEST of American animation. the rising sun wins. And I am still a person who yes remembers ALOT of animation that was american born which remains near and dear to me, but if lets say for instance, you take all the goody goodies of the big 80’s and look at what made them so interesting, you will find that the introductions, many which were done by Japanese animators, set the tone for the show, that, if done other wise by americans ( Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters, and GiJoe for ex.) would have sucked, no actually they did SUCK. Simple as that. Now, for my faves: The Wings of Homenisse(wrong spelling), all of Hiyeo Myazaki’s works, Macross Plus, Esclaflowne the Movie, Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Ninja Scroll, all of Satoshi Kon’s films, The Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner Movie, and Grave of the Fireflies, and those are just films! I think we should all just stop the hating and embrace both sides…and lets not forget canadian animation…lol!
My favorite will always be the first of the little mermaid movies not the new ones!! The amount of research that must have been done to have it come out so beautifully must have been crazy. Sit there and watch how Ariel flows so naturally into her tail. The grace that is shown in how she and all the creatures (under the sea and above it) move is done so well. It was all so beautifully done.
My favourite animation of all time has to be Transformers. It is one of those animations that only improve with the ages. It always leaves me with an active imagination and the need to think of my own combo’s, weapons, robots and tranformations. This will always be my old favourite.
Hmn.. Well, there really should be more Disney classics in there, like really. The Lion King! 1 and 2, the third one was horrible. Disney’s Tarzan.. I really didn’t much like that movie or the human character designs, but it was still lovely.
The Land Before Time has to be a definate fave for me, watched it waaay too many times as a kid and it was wonderful.
Go for tv shows and hmn. The Animals of Farthing Wood, I watched this show like religeously as a kid, what other shows focused on animals behaving fairly naturaly? And with interesting stories!
Away from yer standard 2d animation and well, you have to mention Wallace and Gromit. How can you not love them? Then we have.. The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello which i saw late night on tv once and my gosh.. wow. Think I was won for the art design. Hmn.. then I saw The Tale of How which is a lovely if screechy piece of 3d/2d hybridisation which still sticks in mind. Woo for short films.
Oh, another! Gargoyles, (which I’m actually currently watching through as I never caught them all when younger) lovely disney cartoon when disney did non-brain dead. ..and now I’m probably just listing all those ones I’ve liked.
Really The Lion King’s probably still is and will likely be my ultimate fave animation. Just cause I love animals, it was beautifuly done, the story is great, the songs you can always sing and well.. yeah.
