Texturing in 3D Animation

Tuesday May 10, 2005
Since I was discussing video games earlier and how spoiled I've become by the quality of games put out by the big names in next-gen console gaming, I thought it might be a good time to highlight this article. It's about texturing on 3D models, and how crucial it is to creating a well-composited 3D scene.

It also explains a bit of how it's done, and takes some of the mystery out of it, as I'm sure you can imagine that 3D animators don't model every last rise, bump, and crevice in some leathery creature's hide; there's not enough time in the world for that. Texture-mapping is really quite a useful technique, and one that has helped me out often. I even use it in Photoshop on still images when I'm working on building some art scene or another (then again, I tend to use Photoshop the way some people use 3D Studio Max or Maya; you'd be surprised at how weirdly I apply 3D space techniques to a 2D canvas). So...hope that proves of interest. Enjoy.
