Just repeat the same on each segment of the wings, making sure that the Fill Lock option is turned off so that each segment will have its own individual gradient. This part is easy; the wings were on a separate layer, and easy to keep apart from everything else.

Because of the way that I designed the character and his pose, however, it wouldn’t have been feasible to try to put all of his separate body areas on different layers, so when retracing I had simply had one layer for the base outlines, one layer for the smaller details, and an additional layer for the eyes. This makes it hard to use the Paint Bucket tool to fill in separate areas, as often my blocking outlines are on different layers—but I still want to be able to point and click easily as I work with my colors.

Just to make things easy on myself, I prefer to fill in all the areas that I want to detail with white in the beginning—using the Paint Bucket Tool where I can, and carefully coloring in other areas with the Brush Tool where I can’t, with the Brush Tool set to Paint Behind so that it doesn’t paint over my outlines. I’ve added a background layer to make it easier to see where I might have missed a fill area.
