On a new layer underneath your line layer, start painting in your solid color. Using a layer underneath gives you a bit more freedom so that you don’t have to try so hard to avoid painting over the lines or any solid black fills you’ve used—though you can also turn on the Paint Fills option if you want to stay on the same layer (which I still wouldn’t recommend).
