Populating Multiple Instances of the Window Symbols

Hit F11 to open the Library window, or go to Window -> Library. You should see your symbol listed there; clicking on it will let you bring up a thumbnail view of it in the Library window. You can drag and drop it anywhere onto your canvas.

In this case, I’m going to make a few rows here and there, but scatter them and leave a few blacked out for the sake of realism. (Because I’m fussy like that, but not fussy enough to spend several hours trying to align them all evenly.) Once you’re done with yours, you should have what looks like a skyline silhouette of city lights against a clear night sky. I’ve used the Oval tool and the same sort of soft gradient—this time set on pale grey and white, Radial effect—to draw a moon on a new layer underneath the skyline layer. Whether or not you want to add this to your scene is optional.

Lock your windows layer, and then we’ll move on to making stars.
