Creating Easy Flash-Style Tooltips

At this point you should only have one layer, and one frame. On that first layer, right-click your keyframe and copy it; then click on frame two, right-click, and paste the keyframe to duplicate it. Then create a new layer.

On the new layer, create your tooltip in whatever style that you wish (I’ve made two separate layers: one for the mini-window, one for the text). I’ve kept mine simple: a semitransparent gradient-filled box with a thin outline, and a colored header bar. Your tooltip may contain text, may contain an image--whatever information that you want to expand upon when the user rolls over your highlighted text. Use Flash’s drawing tools to create your own custom mini-window, or import a backdrop from a raster image file. Don’t let the single frame stop you, either. If you want little animated widget or even video on your tooltip, don’t hesitate to use movie clips to place them in that single frame.

Once you’ve finished creating your tool tip, double-check to make sure that your first frame appears blank, while your second frame--and only your second frame--displays the tool tip. Then right-click on the first frame, and insert a scripted stop on that frame.
