Flash Halloween Costume Dress-Up Doll I: Artwork & Setup

The various parts of the costumes/outfits are drawn separately, and in their entirety, even if parts of them will later be obscured (except for the shoes – those, only draw what’s going to be visible). For example, the superhero tights and boots will be partially obscured by the superhero leotard, but I drew the obscured area around the hips anyway. The same goes for the cape, and for the waistband of the schoolgirl skirt. Try to break each outfit that you create down into clearly separated pieces.

If you’re drawing by hand, this is where you’ll find a light table useful. These drawings are going to need to fit cleanly on top of the base doll, so it helps to lay a clean sheet of paper on top of the original drawing of the doll and then sketch your outfits to fit both shape and pose before retracing them with clean line work. When you’re done, scan them into your graphics program. (If you’re drawing in Flash, or drawing digitally in a graphics program, just be sure to follow the guidelines above for fitting the clothing to the doll and breaking the parts down individually.)
