Moving down another level, on the base symbol that just contains the graphic elements for the squishy, I’ve extended out the static one-frame graphic so that it remains solid (with the same facial expression) for eighty frames, to synch up with the other overall parts of the animation. The next step was to take out the facial features and add a different facial expression (including the rather shocked one seen in the last step, before replacing it with…whatever that is up there).

Then I animated the facial expression rolling up and rolling back down, just by using a motion tween to slide the new facial features up and then back down again, making it seem like our blobby little target reeled back from the impact.

If you look at the game setup now, you’ll see that the squishies bounce four times, then stop and reel, then start bouncing again. However, they don’t stop fully, as even though they’re grounded they still slide from side to side—but we’ll cover that in the second lesson in this series.
