If you look on your Timeline, you’ll see that the layer icons have changed; the Masking layer will have a new teal icon next to it representing a Mask layer, while the layer beneath containing your scene will be indented to display its link to the Masking layer with its own new teal icon to display its layer type.

If you need more than one layer under the same mask, you can click and drag them on your Timeline to automatically put them underneath the mask.

Your mask is only visible on stage when all layers involved in it are fully locked. Unlock any layer, and the mask disappears, causing the entire scene to become visible again with the masking object once more showing as a solid shape.
