Retracing Detailed Artwork in Flash

The first thing you’ll need to do is import the image into a new Flash document the same size as your drawing (Modify->Document, and then change the width and height in pixels). You can import it directly onto the stage or to the Library; I prefer to have it in the Library just in case. Click File->Import to Library, browse to the appropriate folder, and select which file to import.

Then drag the image from your Library onto your base layer, for use as a tracing template. You can use the various options in the Align Panel to center and size the image properly on the stage.

Next, select the Pen Tool. We’re going to be spending a lot of time with this one for this lesson, so you’ll either learn to love it or learn to hate it.

You should set your stroke color (I’m going with basic black for now for simplicity) and make sure that there’s no fill color, as you don’t want random shapes filling in just yet. In the Properties panel, select your line weight/thickness.
