Bone

By , About.com Guide

Definition: In 3D animation, a bone is part of a framework used to build a skeleton for a moving object. The skeleton of bones acts as an underlying control for the animated object, and is as invisible as a human skeleton beneath flesh while performing much of the same function. Bone systems help to govern animated motion, often through inverse kinematics, by defining where "joints" are and how different parts of the animated object should bend and stretch, push and pull.
