Next I use my Fill Options to create a gradient with soft pastel colors that appealed to the overall idea in my mind, before drawing a rectangle roughly the size of my canvas and filling it with that gradient (with no stroke). To snap the rectangle size to the size of the stage, you can use the tools on the Align Panel.
