Company History:
Square-Enix began in 1986 as Japan's Square Co., Ltd, producing video games for the Famicon (Nintendo Family Computer). At first the company was remarkably unsuccessful, until the production of the very first Final Fantasy game in 1987. The game was successful enough to be a life-saver, and led to a North American distribution deal that was the start of a long trend of Square's gaming exports from Japan to the Americas; this led to the establishment of Square's North American division, Square Soft Inc., in 1989.

Since then Square has developed dozens of popular games in collaboration with many others (Disney, Electronic Arts, others) for various consoles and platforms, and has branched out into several subsidaries that assist in various development areas for the gaming industry. In 2001, Square even produced a fully-CGI-animated movie, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, in the spirit of its popular Final Fantasy games.

In 2003, in order to cut costs and become more competitive, Square Co., Ltd. and its subsidaries merged with Enix Corporation (another successful name in the gaming industry) to form Square Enix. The company now continues to operate under that name.
