Flash Tip: Turn off Snapping
How to Fix an Annoyance with Freehand Pen Drawing

By Adrien-Luc Sanders, About.com

The pen tool tends to be your greatest asset when creating detailed, smooth Flash drawings.

Unfortunately its settings can also be the bane of your existence when you're trying to place points and curves with precision, only to have them jump to lock on areas away from your target while refusing to land where you want them.

The culprit behind this? Snapping. Flash can snap to grids, guides, pixels, objects, any number of things on the stage that act like a magnet to pull your vector points away from where you want them to go. This can be extremely useful when you're trying to align objects or trying to retrace something - but when trying to freehand in detail, it can drive you absolutely batty.

The fix for this is to turn off snapping. Click View->Snapping in the top menu bar, and click on each of the five types of snapping until they're all turned off. (If they're on, there'll be a check next to the listing.) That should fix your problem. Happy drawing.
